Mike Wilson, the only man ever to win six karting world championships recently popped into Buckmore to visit his old friend Buckmore boss, Bill Sisley. In the 1970's / 1980's Mike was one of the promising young kart racers that Bill advised and was one of the first kart racers to move full time to Italy and become a professional driver for the Birel team. Bill says "I knew Mike's parents Eileen and Brian very well – they were really genuine people and Mike was a great lad. They lived in the Barnsley area and funds were tight but Mike was super talented and I always knew that he would make it. It was a big decision for him to go to Italy and leave his family but the right one. We have always kept in contact and when my son Tom was racing professionally in the mid 1990's in Italy for the Top Kart team, Mike was running Fernando Alonso and Richard Antinucci in his own MW team and we used to meet up to discuss old times. It was good to see Mike again although we are both looking a little older!!
