Sunday Times Winner wins trophy

The culmination of a year of effort.

Nearly every young lad dreams of becoming a top footballer, a rock star, or the next Jenson Button but for Sudbury based George Parker his dream all started with the Sunday Times. Not the usual reading matter for a young man who had only just turned ten, but a competition offering race training at the legendary Buckmore Park Kart Circuit in Kent, piqued his interest. The 1200m circuit has a long history of producing Champions including the current World Champion Jenson Button.

George was selected to be one of 30 finalists to race 160cc Junior Karts in a special Sunday Times event at the iconic circuit. George excelled, despite having no previous experience of either the kart he was driving, or the track itself. He was an obvious winner. The prize on offer was full training at the Sisley Kart School, a series of actual races organised by the Buckmore Park Junior Club, all leading up to the point where George was ready to apply for a race licence. George absorbed his training like a sponge, assimilated into the Junior Club with ease and achieved some good results. He was now ready for the next hurdle, the MSA exam that leads to that all important race licence. Again George excelled and passed both the practical and the written tests with no problems and he was awarded an MSA Novice Kart race licence. This was what the whole year had been about; he was now ready to compete in a full MSA Kart race meeting.

George was furnished with a Honda powered Cadet kart by Buckmore who also included full support from top racing team Project One Racing and was entered into the Buckmore Park Kart Club race meeting on the 21st of February. The day turned out to be very wet, but George’s experience in the Junior Club, where slick tyres are de-rigueur, paid off and after a shaky timed qualifying he was quickly up to speed. He finished midfield in the heat and the pre-final but in the final he excelled. He crossed the line fourth overall, just off the main podium it’s true but he was the highest finishing novice for which he was awarded a fine trophy. Don’t you just love a happy ending!
